Changing from gas or an unused fireplace to wood burning is a system-design project. The existing fireplace construction, chimney condition, clearances, hearth protection, flue size, liner and appliance listing must work together. Decorative gas equipment cannot simply be removed and replaced with a wood fire without confirming that the original fireplace and chimney are approved for solid fuel.

System options

Wood-burning system options

The appliance manufacturer and site conditions determine the final hearth, clearance, liner and connection design.

01

Freestanding wood stove

Best forRooms with suitable floor protection and listed clearances

A listed stove connects through approved chimney connector and a compatible chimney or relined masonry flue. Heat shields and reduced-clearance methods are used only when specifically permitted.

02

Wood-burning fireplace insert

Best forCode-compliant masonry fireplaces sized for a listed insert

The insert is connected to a continuous insulated liner sized to the appliance. Surround panels, access, hearth extension and flue termination are included in planning.

03

Open fireplace restoration

Best forExisting masonry fireplaces originally built and approved for wood

May involve firebox, smoke chamber, damper, liner, crown and termination repairs before the fireplace returns to solid-fuel use.

04

Gas-to-wood feasibility review

Best forHomeowners considering removal of a gas insert or log set

Confirms whether a masonry wood-burning fireplace remains behind the gas equipment, identifies any gas-line abandonment work and evaluates the chimney before a conversion scope is written.

05

Insulated stainless liner package

Best forMost stove and insert connections through masonry chimneys

Includes an appropriately sized listed liner, insulation, appliance connector, support, top plate and termination designed as one continuous vent path.

What to look for

Questions that must be answered before conversion

  • The original fireplace type and listing are unknown
  • A gas line remains inside the firebox
  • The existing flue is damaged, oversized or unlined
  • Combustible trim, flooring or framing is close to the opening
  • The desired stove or insert has not been selected
What the scope can include

A complete written scope

  1. Existing fireplace and chimney feasibility review
  2. Appliance dimensions, listing and clearance verification
  3. Hearth, mantel and wall protection planning
  4. Liner, connector and termination system design
  5. Coordination points for gas, electrical or finish work
How the work moves

Our service process

  1. Inspect the fireplace, flue and surrounding clearances
  2. Select or verify the listed appliance
  3. Build the venting, hearth and protection scope
  4. Complete required repairs before appliance installation
  5. Install, document and review first-use requirements
From selection to final review

A clear project path, with expectations in writing.

01

Inspection & documentation

We inspect accessible conditions, take measurements and document the parts of the system that shape your repair or installation options.

02

System options & written scope

You receive practical material and system choices, a defined scope of work and clear exclusions where hidden conditions may exist.

03

Contract, deposit & scheduling

Once you select your system:

  • We sign a clear, written contract
  • A 30% deposit is collected
  • We schedule your project
04

Installation & progress documentation

We protect the work area, install the approved scope and document important conditions and completed details as the project moves forward.

05

Cleanup & final inspection

We clean the property thoroughly. Most exterior construction sites are approximately 90-99% clean the same day. For qualifying multi-day masonry and exterior projects, our next-day closeout can include:

  • A final inspection
  • An additional magnetic sweep
  • Final drone photos when conditions and location allow
  • A complete quality-control review

Exact payment milestones, closeout steps and return visits are stated in the written contract for the selected project.

Service questions

Details worth understanding.

Final specifications depend on the inspected conditions, appliance listing, selected manufacturer and applicable local requirements.

Can every gas fireplace be converted to wood burning?+

No. Many factory-built gas fireplaces are not constructed or listed for solid fuel. Conversion is only considered when the underlying fireplace and chimney system are confirmed suitable and all clearances and venting requirements can be met.

Does a wood stove need a stainless liner?+

A stove or insert normally needs a correctly sized, continuous listed vent path. In a masonry chimney, an insulated stainless liner is commonly used to connect the appliance through the full chimney height.
